Excellent Opening to the 2010 UniSA Australian HPV Super Series

31st May 2010
The 2010 UniSA Australian HPV Super Series is well and truly underway with the first race of the season run and won.

On Sunday, the peace and quiet of Victoria Park was transformed into a HPV Mecca for a record 150 teams, with several thousand competitors taking part. Added to this, the colour and spectacle of another few thousand spectators made for a crackerjack day – and we have some new names on the winners’ list!

Big news in Category 1 (Primary School) was the all-smiling team from Aberfoyle Park Primary School Campus, Computer Screamer. They won the Category by a whopping eighteen laps! “We’ve wanted this win for ages,” said one of their riders at the presentation. “We’ve been trying to beat Aberfoyle Hub for ages, and today our hard work paid off with a win.” Notably, the nearby Aberfoyle Hub did miss out on a top-three spot for the first time in ages (but no doubt they will strike back in Round 2). Fire (Immanuel College), Hahndorf Hornets Silver (St Michaels Hahndorf and Airbourne (Westbourne Park Primary) also had days in the sun, with Airbourne winning the coveted first place in the Formula Tri-Sled Category.

Immanuel College also had an excellent result in both Category 2 (Junior Secondary) with their entry Ice. They scored an eleven lap win, which is huge considering the competition behind them, including Blur 2 (Loxton High School)and Scorpio (Gleeson College). It’s nothing new to see teams from Immanuel on the podium, and they will surely be celebrating with both units well placed for the 2010 Season.

Category 3 (Upper Secondary) was a lot closer, and reignited the friendly rivalry between two teams from the Adelaide Hills, Vortex Ultimo (Heathfield High School) and Powered by Sarcasm (Mount Barker High School). Heathfield got the best of the day, finishing two laps ahead of the Mount Barker Team – since Mount Barker arrived on the scene only recently, they have looked primed to eat up the Championship. Can Heathfield hold them off?

Category 4 (Open) produced a tight finish, with the top three teams ending the race with only a handful of laps between them. After several lead changes and a dramatic rollover for the eventual winner, Tru Blu (Tru Blu Racing) was able to hold off the late-charging 2009 National Champions Aquila (Tri-Sled Fresh Racing) and early leaders Team Phantom (Deakin University Student Association). It made for a thrilling finish.

You’ll find all the teams that made it onto the podium at the end of this article.

Also, now is a good time to become a friend and a fan of The Australian International Pedal Prix on Facebook. Check out our photos – you might see your team. You’ll find the Facebook link in the menu to your left. It’s an excellent forum for all of us to chat and comment and stay connected through the sport we love – for our younger competitors and friends, though, make sure you’re allowed on Facebook before signing up.

OK folks, rest your legs for a moment, but then it’s back to the track: seven weeks to go until Round Two! Check where your team stands in the overall scheme of things on the Results link, then come out swinging in Round 2. Good luck!
