Get set for a weekend of fireworks, as the biggest HPV race ever to hit Victoria Park storms the track this Sunday.
It’s the running of the inaugural UniSA HPV Endurance 9 Hour – and we’re promised a huge weekend of racing. From 10am right through until 7pm, teams will push their vehicles and themselves for a grueling nine hours straight – the first time ever the race has been run under lights.
In an interview on The SA Sports Show with Rachel Sporn and Katrina Webb (airing Channel 31, Friday July 24, 7:30pm), AIPP Chairman Andrew McLachlan and Announcer Paul Richards talked about the ways in which the sport is exploding in popularity.
“It’s been growing exponentially,” said Andrew. “We have an online registration system that opened in February. (The races) were fully subscribed within the first twenty-four hours.”
“Again, it’s a record field,” said Paul. “And this year, because teams will be riding in the dark, it’ll give them the chance to test their lighting and become accustomed to night racing. And racing under lights demands a whole new level of skills – it’s a very exciting concept.”
Mr McLachlan also stated that AIPP Inc is involved in talks to push the sport nationwide – we’ll keep you posted on this.
He also spoke of our exciting new relationship with UniSA – and this week, UniSA makes its debut on the track. Team UniSA comprises of six students currently studying Mechanical Engineering, Business Management and Pharmacy at the university.
Team UniSA Manager Brian McAvaney said he is keen to build on Team UniSA’s involvement in the Australian HPV Super Series. Next year, he’d like to help a school team with the engineering and design of their vehicle.
“It’s a great event and it’s not something I got to do when I was at school,” he said, “so I’d like to be able to help out a school team, and maybe help to develop some of our budding young mechanical engineers of the future.”
Also adding to the big buzz this weekend, Channel 10 will be there, filming for Totally Wild. This is a fantastic scoop for the Series, but it’ll also make for some terrific stories for the celebrated kids’ show.
Think back for a moment: Round One was a blast, with the new look track creating a slippery challenge and many hairy moments. Now, we’re racing for nine hours … and it’s going to be dark for the last two.
So, get set; this will be a race to remember. The UniSA HPV Endurance 9 Hour is going to push you to the absolute edge.
Good luck!
